What is Bouncy Castle Insurance?

Bouncy Castle Insurance, also commonly described as Inflatable Hire Insurance, is commercial insurance designed for businesses that own and hire out inflatable play equipment. Rather than being one single cover, it can combine several types of protection around the way an inflatable hire business operates.

A typical business may transport equipment to a customer’s premises, set it up, operate or supervise it, collect it afterwards and store it between hires. This can create liability exposures as well as financial exposure if valuable equipment is lost or damaged.

Peacock has access to specialist schemes for hirers and operators of inflatable play equipment. Current cover options can include Public Liability, Employers’ Liability and protection against insured loss or damage to eligible equipment, subject to the insurer’s terms and underwriting.

Core cover options

What insurance can an inflatable hire business need?

The appropriate policy depends on your activities, equipment and workforce. These are some of the main covers commonly considered by inflatable hirers.

Public Liability Insurance

Public Liability can protect your business against insured claims made by customers or other third parties following injury or property damage connected with your business activities.

For an inflatable hirer, a claim might arise from an allegation involving the set-up, use or operation of equipment supplied by the business.

  • Different indemnity limits may be available.
  • Customers or venues may require a particular liability limit.
  • Policy conditions around operation and supervision must be followed.

Employers’ Liability Insurance

Employers’ Liability can protect against insured employee injury or illness claims. Most UK businesses that employ people are legally required to hold Employers’ Liability Insurance, subject to limited exemptions.

This can be relevant where you use permanent employees, seasonal staff or casual workers to deliver, set up, operate or collect equipment.

  • Most employers are legally required to hold cover.
  • Employment status should be disclosed accurately.
  • Casual or temporary staff can still affect your requirements.

Inflatable Equipment Cover

Your inflatables can represent a substantial investment. Depending on the policy selected, cover can be considered for insured loss or damage to eligible owned inflatable equipment.

Peacock’s existing inflatable insurance proposition also refers to material damage risks such as theft, accidental damage and malicious damage, subject to policy terms.

  • Use realistic replacement values when selecting sums insured.
  • Check storage and security conditions carefully.
  • Individual item limits and excesses may apply.

Goods in Transit / Associated Equipment

Depending on the scheme, cover may also be available for eligible equipment while being transported, together with associated hire equipment used as part of your operation.

Always check exactly what property is insured, when transit cover applies and whether there are restrictions around unattended vehicles or overnight storage.

  • Transit and storage conditions can vary between insurers.
  • Associated equipment must be declared where required.
  • Cover remains subject to the quotation and policy wording.
Insurance is subject to eligibility, underwriting and insurer terms, conditions, limits and exclusions. The descriptions on this page are general and should be read alongside your quotation and policy wording.

Safety & risk management

Safe operation matters as much as having insurance

Insurance does not replace the health and safety responsibilities that apply when inflatable equipment is supplied, hired or operated commercially.

01

Inspection & certification

HSE guidance says owners or those making play inflatables available for use are responsible for appropriate initial testing and annual inspection by a competent person. PIPA and ADIPS are recognised inspection schemes.

02

Wind monitoring

HSE guidance states that play inflatables should not be operated above 24 mph (38 km/h) winds, and some manufacturers specify a lower limit. An anemometer should be used outdoors.

03

Anchoring & set-up

All required anchor points should be used and the equipment should be set up in accordance with the manufacturer’s operating instructions, taking the ground surface and surrounding hazards into account.

04

Supervision & operation

Safe-use instructions, user limits and ongoing supervision should be followed. Operators should continue checking the inflatable and its anchoring while it is available for use.

Important: the Health and Safety Executive publishes detailed, current guidance for commercial bouncy castles and other play inflatables. Its guidance covers inspection, anchoring, wind limits, blowers, pressure, supervision and safe operation. Read the HSE guidance .

What can affect the cost of Bouncy Castle Insurance?

Premiums are determined by the insurer after considering the characteristics of the individual business and the cover requested.

Type of equipment The number, type and nature of the inflatables or other attractions you operate can affect the risk.
Equipment values Higher replacement values can increase the amount the insurer could have to pay following an insured loss.
Turnover & hire activity Insurers may consider annual turnover, frequency of hires and the overall scale of the operation.
Staff & supervision Employees, casual workers and whether your team operates or supervises equipment can be relevant.
Claims history Previous incidents or claims can form part of the insurer’s assessment of the business.
Cover limits selected Liability limits, equipment sums insured and optional covers can all affect the final premium.

Frequently asked questions

Bouncy Castle Insurance FAQs

Common questions about insurance for UK bouncy castle and inflatable hire businesses.

What insurance does a bouncy castle hire business need?
The appropriate cover depends on the business. Public Liability Insurance is commonly considered, Employers’ Liability can be legally required if you employ people, and cover may also be arranged for eligible inflatable equipment. Other covers can be relevant depending on the activities and equipment involved.
Is Public Liability Insurance compulsory for bouncy castle hirers?
Public Liability Insurance is generally not compulsory by law in the UK, but venues, local authorities, schools, commercial customers and other organisations can require a specified level of cover before allowing you to supply or operate equipment.
Does Bouncy Castle Insurance cover damage to my inflatables?
Cover for insured loss or damage to eligible owned equipment can be available depending on the policy selected. Theft, accidental damage, malicious damage, storage and transit conditions should all be checked against the specific quotation and policy wording.
Can I insure inflatable slides and obstacle courses as well as bouncy castles?
Yes, specialist schemes can consider a broader range of inflatable attractions. Peacock’s current product information includes inflatable slides, assault or obstacle courses, bungee runs, ball ponds, bouncy boxing and other leisure attractions, subject to insurer acceptance.
Do bouncy castles need annual safety inspections?
HSE guidance says owners or people making play inflatables available for use are responsible for ensuring an annual inspection is carried out by a competent person. PIPA and ADIPS are recognised schemes used for inflatable and amusement-device inspections.
What is the maximum safe wind speed for a bouncy castle?
HSE guidance states that play inflatables should not be used in winds above 24 mph (38 km/h), and some manufacturers specify a lower maximum. Outdoor operators should use an anemometer and follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions.
Can I get Bouncy Castle Insurance if I employ casual staff?
Casual, seasonal or temporary workers can affect your Employers’ Liability requirements. Provide accurate details about everyone working in the business when requesting a quotation so the insurer can assess the position correctly.
Does this policy cover someone hiring a bouncy castle for a private party?
No. This product is designed for businesses that own inflatable equipment and hire it out commercially. It is not intended as insurance for a private customer who is simply hiring a bouncy castle for their own event.
Can same-day cover be arranged?
Same-day cover can be available, but it depends on the information provided, insurer acceptance, completion of any required documentation and payment. Cover should never be assumed to be in force until it has been formally confirmed.
